Overview

The Snow Leopard Expedition in Spiti Valley is one of the most thrilling wildlife adventures in the Indian Himalayas. Known as the “ghost of the mountains,” the Snow Leopard is among the rarest and most beautiful big cats in the world. Every winter, as snow blankets the high Himalayas, these elusive predators descend from remote ridgelines of over 5000 meters to lower altitudes around 4000–4200 meters in search of prey. This creates a rare and rewarding opportunity for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers to track and observe them in their natural habitat.

The Spiti Valley in Himachal Pradesh is among the best locations in South Asia for spotting Snow Leopards. The barren ridges, deep gorges, and icy cliffs here harbor not just Snow Leopards but also a fascinating range of high‑altitude wildlife such as Himalayan Ibex, Blue Sheep (Bharal), Tibetan Wolf, Red Fox, Himalayan Snowcock, Lammergeier, Golden Eagle, Himalayan Griffon, Great Rosefinch, and Black‑winged Snowfinches. The region also offers breathtaking Himalayan scenery – vast stark valleys, snow‑covered peaks, and the warm hospitality of Spitian villages.

This expedition is not just a wildlife trip; it is a complete Spiti experience where we combine adventure, nature, and local culture. From staying in traditional homestays in Chicham village to exploring ancient monasteries like Kee Monastery, every moment of this journey is rich with experiences. If spotting a Snow Leopard is a dream for you, then winter in Spiti Valley is your best chance to make that dream come true.

Itinerary

Day 1: Chandigarh to Rampur (or Kalpa)

We begin our Himalayan journey from Chandigarh/ Shimla and drive through pine forests, apple orchards, and riverside villages along the Sutlej. This is a scenic, relaxed day to help us acclimatize slowly as we climb into the mountains. Overnight at Rampur (or Kalpa).

Day 2: Rampur to Tabo

Today’s drive takes us on the historic Hindustan–Tibet Road, one of the most dramatic roads in the world. We follow the Sutlej River, then enter the stark, high‑altitude landscapes of Spiti Valley. The scenery changes drastically as we gain altitude, with rocky cliffs and frozen rivers in sight. Overnight stay in the monastery village of Tabo.

Day 3: Tabo to Chicham (via Kee Monastery)

After breakfast, we continue our drive deeper into Spiti. En route, we visit the spectacular Kee Monastery, a centuries‑old gompa with panoramic views of the valley. By afternoon, we reach Chicham, our base camp for the Snow Leopard expedition. The rest of the day is kept easy for acclimatization, preparing equipment, and exploring the village. Overnight stay at a homestay in Chicham.

Day 4 to 9: Snow Leopard Tracking (Chicham Base Camp)

For six full days, we immerse ourselves in the heart of Spiti’s winter wilderness. Each morning, after a warm cup of tea, we head out with our team of trained spotters and guides to scan ridges, cliffs, and gorges for signs of the Snow Leopard.

We learn to recognize pugmarks, scrapes, and scent markings while patiently observing the landscape with spotting scopes. Every day in the field holds the possibility of a life‑changing Snow Leopard sighting. Alongside, we may encounter incredible wildlife such as:

  • Snow Leopard
  • Himalayan Ibex & Blue Sheep (Bharal) – the main prey of the leopard
  • Tibetan Wolf & Red Fox
  • High‑altitude raptors like Lammergeier, Golden Eagle, Himalayan Griffon
  • Ground birds such as Tibetan Snowcock, Himalayan Snowcock, Snowfinches, Accentors, and Rosefinches

Evenings are spent relaxing by the fire, enjoying local Spitian cuisine, and sharing stories in warm village homestays. This blend of wildlife adventure and cultural immersion makes the expedition truly unique.

Day 10: Chicham to Rampur Bushahr

After an early breakfast, we bid farewell to Chicham and start our return journey. The drive takes us back through the snowy landscapes of Spiti and Kinnaur, offering new photo opportunities at every bend. Overnight in Rampur Bushahr.

Day 11: Rampur to Chandigarh – Departure

On our final day, we continue our descent through Himachal’s mid‑hills surrounded by apple orchards, deodar forests, and charming villages. We reach Chandigarh by evening, marking the end of our expedition with unforgettable memories of the Himalayas – and hopefully, sightings of the illusive Snow Leopard, the ghost of the mountains.
