This tough bird thrives in Ladakh's extreme barren plains and ridges near Tso Kar or Pangong Tso, at elevations over 4,000 meters in the Himalayas. It's built for survival with fast, direct flights to dawn watering holes, flocks that stick together, and hidden nests on stony plateaus—showing its strength in dry, remote spots. Listed as Least Concern but with dropping numbers, it points to the health of high-altitude life, pulling birders to Ladakh's wetlands from May to June during breeding time. What makes it truly special? Males act as "water carriers." They fly long distances each morning to fetch water for chicks, soaking belly feathers like a sponge. Picture this: Dad wades belly-deep into a water hole at dawn, fluffs up, rocks side-to-side to drench his special coiled, hair-like feather tips that trap water tight through capillary action—holding up to 25 ml. He flies back, even 20+ km over rocky plains far from water, and the chicks "milk" it by rubbing their beaks on his wet belly.
