Overview
This tour takes you on a carefully paced winter birding journey through Himachal Pradesh, from the lower Himalayan streams of Chakki Morh to the deodar forests of Narkanda and on to the high-altitude valleys of Kinnaur.
Chakki Morh and Solan sit in the lower Himalayan foothills, where fast-flowing rocky streams and forest edges hold specialities such as Wallcreeper, Crested Kingfisher, Brown Dipper and Little Forktail, alongside barbets, parakeets, warblers and wintering finches.
Narkanda, set amid dense deodar forest around Hatu Peak and Thanedar, is prime habitat for Himalayan Monal, Koklass Pheasant, White-cheeked Nuthatch, Black-and-yellow Grosbeak and Pink-browed Rosefinch, with the chance of an evening owling session for Collared Owlet and Himalayan Wood Owl.
Beyond Narkanda, the tour crosses into the high-altitude Kinnaur valley, birding along the Baspa and Sutlej rivers around Rakchham and Kalpa. This is winter specialities territory — Ibisbill, Rufous-backed Redstart, Red-throated Thrush, Black-throated Accentor, White-browed Rosefinch and Bearded Vulture are all on the cards here, alongside orchard and rocky-slope birding around Kalpa’s villages.
The itinerary is kept flexible throughout, as access and birding opportunities in this high-altitude winter landscape depend on snowfall and road conditions — particularly around Rakchham, which will be reconfirmed closer to departure.

Day 1: Chandigarh - Chakki Morh - Narkanda
Early pickup from Chandigarh, followed by a morning birding session at Chakki Morh before breakfast. We continue on towards Narkanda, with optional birding stops along the way. Chakki Morh’s rocky stream and forest-edge habitat is excellent for Wallcreeper, Crested Kingfisher, Brown Dipper, Little Forktail, White-capped Redstart, Plumbeous Redstart, Nepal Cupwing, White-capped Bunting, Common Kingfisher, White-throated Kingfisher, Great Barbet, Blue-throated Barbet, Ashy-throated Warbler, Western Crowned Warbler, Hume’s Leaf Warbler, Lemon-rumped Warbler, Grey-hooded Warbler, Crimson Sunbird, Oriental Turtle Dove, Eurasian Collared Dove, Spotted Dove, Rose-ringed Parakeet, Plum-headed Parakeet, House Sparrow, Red-vented Bulbul, Himalayan Bulbul, Grey Wagtail, White Wagtail, Long-tailed Shrike, Himalayan Prinia and Grey-breasted Prinia.

Day 2: Full-Day Birding Around Narkanda
A full day exploring Hatu Peak, Thanedar and the surrounding deodar forest trails, with an optional evening owling session. Day 3: Narkanda - Rakchham
A morning birding session around Narkanda before breakfast and departure for Rakchham, with river-stretch birding stops along the way and further birding around Rakchham after arrival. As the road climbs, this is a strong day for raptors and corvids alongside river specialities: Brown Dipper, Wallcreeper, White-capped Redstart, Snow Pigeon, Himalayan Buzzard, Bearded Vulture, Eurasian Griffon, Golden Eagle, Booted Eagle, Steppe Eagle, Bonelli’s Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Mountain Hawk-Eagle, Black Eagle, Eurasian Kestrel, Southern Nutcracker, Common Raven and Large-billed Crow.

Day 4: Full-Day Birding Around Rakchham
A full day exploring the Baspa River, village surroundings, agricultural fields, forest edges and open slopes, with dedicated searches for Kinnaur’s winter specialities: Rufous-backed Redstart, Red-throated Thrush, White-browed Rosefinch, Ibisbill, White-bellied Redstart, Black-throated Thrush, Black-throated Accentor, Rufous-breasted Accentor, Altai Accentor, Alpine Accentor, Black Redstart, Blue-fronted Redstart, Blue-capped Redstart, White-winged Redstart, Mistle Thrush, Grey-winged Blackbird, Blue Whistling Thrush, Spotted Forktail, Siberian Stonechat, Pied Bushchat, Grey Bushchat and House Crow.
Overnight at Rakchham.
Day 5: Rakchham - Kalpa
Morning birding around Rakchham for any remaining targets, then breakfast and departure for Kalpa, birding along the Baspa and Sutlej valleys en route, with an afternoon session around Kalpa. This high-altitude valley stretch is good for finches, sunbirds and aerial feeders: Rufous-backed Redstart, Red-throated Thrush, White-browed Rosefinch, Plain Mountain Finch, Himalayan Beautiful Rosefinch, Chestnut-eared Bunting, Spectacled Finch (rare), Fire-fronted Serin, Chestnut Thrush, Fire-tailed Sunbird, Green-tailed Sunbird (rare), White-throated Needletail, Asian House Martin, Himalayan Swiftlet, Barn Swallow, Eurasian Crag Martin and Dusky Crag Martin.
Overnight at Kalpa.
Day 6: Kalpa - Narkanda
An early birding session around Kalpa’s orchards, village edges, rocky slopes and open habitats, followed by breakfast and the return journey to Narkanda with birding stops en route. Targets in this varied habitat include White-throated Tit (rare), Red-headed Bullfinch, White-cheeked Nuthatch, Rock Bunting, Snow Pigeon, Himalayan Griffon, Common Wood Pigeon, Golden Bush Robin, Rufous-bellied Niltava, Chestnut-bellied Rock Thrush, Himalayan Bluetail, Ultramarine Flycatcher, Rufous-gorgeted Flycatcher, Whiskered Yuhina, Indian White-eye, Fire-breasted Flowerpecker, Upland Pipit and Long-tailed Minivet.

Day 7: Narkanda - Solan
A final morning of birding around Narkanda’s forest trails before breakfast and departure for Solan, with birding stops possible en route and an evening session around Solan if time permits — a last opportunity for Narkanda’s forest birds, along with roadside winter visitors and lower-altitude species as we descend: Oriental Magpie-Robin, Fulvous-breasted Woodpecker, Alexandrine Parakeet, Slaty-headed Parakeet, Russet Sparrow, Grey-sided Bush Warbler, Brownish-flanked Bush Warbler, Buff-barred Warbler and Chestnut-headed Tesia.
Overnight at Solan.
Day 8: Solan - Chakki Morh - Chandigarh
An early morning birding session around Solan, followed by breakfast and a drive to Chakki Morh, where we continue birding for as long as flight timings allow before the drop at Chandigarh Airport. Look for Grey-crowned Goldfinch, Yellow-breasted Greenfinch and other Solan winter birds, along with Wallcreeper, Brown Dipper, Crested Kingfisher, Little Forktail and other Chakki Morh specialities.
The tour concludes at Chandigarh.
Important Winter Notes
This itinerary is flexible and may be modified according to snowfall, road access and weather conditions. Rakchham access and accommodation will be reconfirmed before departure. All species listed are probable sightings in natural habitats and cannot be guaranteed. White-browed Rosefinch occurrence in particular varies with snowfall, food availability and seasonal movement.
