Overview
Tucked away in India’s far north-east, bordering Myanmar and Bangladesh, Mizoram remains one of the least-birded states in the country — and one of the most rewarding for anyone chasing Eastern Himalayan and Indo-Burmese specialities. This tour takes you through three of the state’s finest birding grounds: Hmuifang / Sailam, the rolling forested hills of Sangau, and Phawngpui (Blue Mountain) National Park, the highest point in Mizoram at 2,157 m and one of only two national parks in the state.
Sailam Bird Sanctuary and the Hmuifang range sit in mid-elevation subtropical forest, offering an easy introduction to the region’s bulbuls, warblers, fulvettas and prinias, along with raptors like the Oriental Honey-buzzard drifting over the ridgelines. From here the route climbs steadily south toward Sangau and on to Thaltlang, the trailhead for Phawngpui — a remote, forest-cloaked massif that is the single best site in India for a suite of Chin Hills and Indo-Myanmar specialities found almost nowhere else in the country, including the Mount Victoria Babax, Chin Hills Wren-babbler and Red-faced Liocichla.
This is a birding trip for those chasing range-restricted species rather than volume — the terrain is remote, the trails are quiet, and days are built around slow, patient forest and ridge birding with an experienced local guide who knows exactly where each target has been showing.
Trip Highlights

- Look for Himalayan and Indo-Burmese skulkers including Grey-bellied Tesia, Lesser Shortwing, Scaly-breasted and Pygmy Cupwing, and both Brown-crowned and Spot-breasted Scimitar Babblers.
- Work through a full suite of fulvettas — Rusty-capped, Rufous-winged, Brown-cheeked and Nepal Fulvetta — plus Grey Sibia, Crested Finchbill and Rusty-fronted Barwing.
- Search for Stripe-breasted Woodpecker, Speckled Piculet, Hume’s Treecreeper and Mountain Bamboo Partridge in the forests around Phawngpui.
- Overnight close to the birding at each stop — Sailam/Hmuifang, Sangau, and as close to Phawngpui NP as permits allow — to maximise time in the field during the best early-morning and late-afternoon activity windows.

Itinerary
Day 1: Airport to Hmuifang / Sailam Bird Sanctuary
On arrival at the airport, we drive to our hotel / Sailam Bird Sanctuary area, settling in ahead of an afternoon birding session in the surrounding subtropical forest. This mid-elevation habitat is a good introduction to the region’s commoner but locally special birds, with chances for Flavescent Bulbul, White-throated Bulbul, Rufescent Prinia, Striated Swallow, Asian House Martin, Puff-throated Babbler, and soaring Oriental Honey-buzzard overhead.

Day 2: Sailam Birding, Drive to Sangau
An early start for a focused birding session around Sailam, working the forest edges and streambanks for warblers and prinias, including Buff-throated Warbler, Yellow-browed Warbler, Brown Bush Warbler and Russet Bush Warbler, alongside fulvetta flocks moving through the canopy.
After the morning session, we drive south to Sangau, arriving in the afternoon with time to settle in.

Day 3: Drive to Thaltlang, Birding in Phawngpui National Park
An early morning drive takes us to Thaltlang, the base for Phawngpui (Blue Mountain) National Park. From here we begin birding into the park itself, working the forest trails for some of the trip’s headline targets — Mount Victoria Babax, Chin Hills Wren-babbler, Rusty-fronted Barwing, Spot-breasted Parrotbill, and Golden-throated Barbet, alongside chances for Ashy Wood Pigeon and Mountain Bamboo Partridge along quieter stretches of trail.
Overnight at Phawngpui NP if permitted, otherwise at Sangau / Thaltlang.
Day 4: Full Day Birding in Phawngpui National Park
A full day dedicated to Phawngpui’s forest interior and higher ridgelines, home to the park’s most sought-after skulkers and laughingthrushes. Targets include Assam Laughingthrush, Striped Laughingthrush, Blue-winged Laughingthrush, Spot-breasted Laughingthrush, Red-faced Liocichla, Grey Sibia, and Crested Finchbill, along with careful searching in the undergrowth for Grey-bellied Tesia, Lesser Shortwing, Scaly-breasted Cupwing and Pygmy Cupwing.
Overnight at Phawngpui NP / Sangau / Thaltlang.
Day 5: Early Morning Birding in Phawngpui, Drive Back to Sailam
One last early session in Phawngpui to close out remaining targets — Brown-crowned Scimitar Babbler, Spot-breasted Scimitar Babbler, Stripe-breasted Woodpecker, Hume’s Treecreeper and Speckled Piculet are all possible around the park’s mixed forest and bamboo stands.
After birding, we drive back to Sailam, checking into the hotel.

Day 6: Early Morning Birding at Sailam, Drive to Lengpui
A final focused session around Sailam in the early morning for any remaining fulvettas and warblers — Rusty-capped Fulvetta, Rufous-winged Fulvetta, Brown-cheeked Fulvetta and Nepal Fulvetta are all worked for here, along with a last look for Oriental Honey-buzzard and any lingering targets from earlier in the trip.
After breakfast, we drive back toward Lengpui, arriving in the evening.

Day 7: Birding Around Lengpui, Departure
A relaxed birding session around the grounds of our Lodge in the early morning, a good chance to catch up on photographs of species seen earlier in the trip. After breakfast, we head to the airport for departure.
