Overview

Bandhavgarh National Park, located in the Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh, is one of India’s most famous wildlife sanctuaries and tiger reserves. It is known for having the highest density of Royal Bengal Tigers in the world, making it a dream destination for tiger lovers. The reserve spreads over a total area of about 1536 sq km, which includes a core zone of 716 sq km and a buffer zone of about 820 sq km. The park’s altitude varies from 400 to 800 meters, It lies between the Vindhya and Satpura mountain ranges and is spread over hills, valleys, and forested landscapes.
With over 165 tigers recorded recently, Bandhavgarh plays a crucial role in India’s wildlife conservation and tourism. Madhya Pradesh itself has the highest number of tigers in India, showcasing the success of dedicated conservation efforts.

Bandhavgarh’s forests mainly consist of dense sal trees, mixed forests, and grasslands, supporting a rich biodiversity. Apart from tigers, the park is home to over 30 species of mammals, including leopards, sloth bears, wild boar, Indian fox, jungle cats, barking deer, sambar deer, nilgai, and langurs. Birdwatchers will delight in the presence of 260+ bird species, such as hornbills, eagles, parakeets, and owls. Reptiles and butterflies also add to the vibrant ecosystem.

The park is divided into core and buffer zones. The core zone is split into three main safari zones—Tala, Magadhi, and Khitauli—which are the prime areas for jeep safaris and tiger sightings. The buffer zone includes Dhamokhar, Johila (Kalwa), and Panpatha (Pachpedi). Most visitors focus on the core zones because of the high chances of spotting tigers and other wildlife.

Bandhavgarh’s uniqueness lies not just in its tiger population but also in the easy visibility due to relatively thin forest cover and open meadows. Tigers here are often seen during the day while hunting, resting, or roaming their territories. This makes safaris especially exciting and rewarding.

The park is also rich in cultural heritage, with the 10th-century Bandhavgarh Fort offering breathtaking views of the surrounding wilderness.

Exploring Bandhavgarh on a tiger safari is an amazing experience that brings you close to India’s rich wildlife and stunning landscapes, historical sites, and expert guides creating memories that last a lifetime.
