Overview

We will embark on the Great Lakes trek in Kashmir, a beautiful and peaceful journey through some of the most stunning mountain lakes and valleys. Over seven days, we will walk about 69 kilometers, passing clear blue lakes, green meadows, and tall snowy mountains. Each day will bring new sights and fresh air as we camp beside quiet lakes and enjoy the calm of nature around us. The highest point of our trek will be Gadsar Pass at nearly 14,000 feet, where the views are truly breathtaking.

We will start by driving from Srinagar to our base camp at Shitkadi, then begin our trek step by step, adjusting to the altitude and taking in the changing landscape. Our nights will be spent camping in tents, surrounded by the beauty and silence of the mountains. Along the way, we might meet local shepherds and see some of the unique plants and animals that live here.

This trek is not only about walking but also about experiencing the peace and beauty of Kashmir’s wild places together. When we finish, we will walk down to the village of Naranag, where old temples tell stories of the past. After that, we will drive back to Srinagar, full of memories from our adventure.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Base Camp - Shitkadi

We will arrive at Srinagar and then take a drive of about 3 hours covering 80 kilometers to reach our base camp at Shitkadi. The journey itself is beautiful with views of the valley and mountains. After reaching, we will set up our tents and get ready for the trek. This day is mostly for resting and getting used to the height.

Day 2: Trek from Sonamarg to Nichnai via Shekdur (11 km, 6-7 hours)

We start our trek from Sonamarg and pass through green fields and forests. We will stop at Shekdur, a nice grassy area, before reaching Nichnai at an altitude of 11,500 feet. The trail is gentle and gives us many chances to rest and enjoy nature. We will camp here for the night.

Day 3: Trek from Nichnai to Vishnusar Lake (12 km, 6-7 hours)

Today, we continue walking to Vishnusar Lake at 12,000 feet. The path goes through beautiful meadows and rocky stretches. Vishnusar Lake is known for its clear water and fish. We will camp near the lake and enjoy the quiet and peaceful surroundings.

Day 4: Trek from Vishnusar to Gadsar via Kishansar Lake & Gadsar Pass (14 km, 7-8 hours)

This is our toughest day as we cross Gadsar Pass, the highest point of the trek at 13,800 feet. We will pass Kishansar Lake first and then climb up to the pass. The views from here are amazing with snow-covered peaks all around. After crossing the pass, we will carefully descend to camp at Gadsar.

Day 5: Trek from Gadsar to Satsar (12 km, 6-7 hours)

From Gadsar, we trek downhill to Satsar lakes at 12,000 feet. This day is relaxing as we walk through flower-filled meadows and spot birds. We will camp beside the calm Satsar lakes and rest for the night.

Day 6: Trek from Satsar to Gangabal Twin Lakes (9 km, 6-7 hours)

We take a shorter day to reach Gangabal, famous for its twin lakes. Surrounded by tall mountains, these lakes are stunning spots for photos and relaxing. We will camp near the lakes and soak in the fresh mountain air.

Day 7: Trek from Gangabal to Naranag & Drive to Srinagar (11 km trek, 50 km drive)

Our final day involves trekking down to the village of Naranag, where we will see old temple ruins and learn about local culture. After the trek, we will take a two-hour drive back to Srinagar, arriving by evening with many happy memories of the trek.
