Overview
The Tungnath – Chandrashila trek in Chopta is a breathtaking beginner to moderate Himalayan trek that offers a beautiful blend of spiritual, natural, and adventurous experiences. The best time to visit is during May to June (spring to early summer) and September to October (autumn) when the weather is pleasant, skies are clear, and trekking conditions are ideal. The region is rich in flora including dense coniferous forests of deodar, pine, and fir, and vibrant alpine meadows (bugyals) blooming with wildflowers in summer. Birdlife is abundant, with species like the Himalayan Monal, Koklass pheasant, woodpeckers, and golden eagles enriching the natural experience.
The trek provides stunning views of the towering Himalayan peaks, including the majestic Chaukhamba (7,138 m), a massive four-summit mountain; Nanda Devi (7,816 m), India’s second-highest peak; Trishul (7,120 m), known for its sharp triple peaks; Bandarpunch (6,316 m), and Kedarnath (6,940 m), a revered peak in the region. These peaks create a spectacular backdrop along the trek, especially from the summit of Chandrashila, where a 360-degree panoramic view awaits trekkers. From this vantage point, the first and last light of dawn creates a magical spectacle.
The trek is famous for visiting the Tungnath Temple, believed to be the world’s highest Shiva temple situated at about 3,680 meters (12,073 ft). This ancient temple over 1,000 years old, believed to have been built by the Pandavas from the Mahabharata, carries immense spiritual importance and exudes a timeless, peaceful atmosphere to the trek.
