Overview
Tucked away in the hills of Kumaon, just 15 km from Nainital, Pangot is often called the birdwatcher’s paradise of Uttarakhand. It is not only one of the earliest known birding destinations in the region, but also a place that continues to attract bird lovers from around the world. Pangot falls under the Naina Devi Bird Conservation Reserve, a protected area covered with thick oak, pine, and rhododendron forests. These forests, valleys, and ridges form the perfect habitat for hundreds of Himalayan and forest bird species.
What makes Pangot so special for birdwatchers is its diversity. Here you can encounter sought‑after Himalayan species like the Cheer Pheasant and Koklass Pheasant, along with flocks of warblers, finches, woodpeckers, accentors, and thrushes. Winters are particularly rewarding as birds move closer to lower altitudes, making sightings easier and more frequent. Every trail, from deep forest paths to open ridges, promises something new to discover.
Apart from the birdlife, Pangot is equally famous for its stunning mountain views. On a clear day, the birding trails unfold epic views of the Garhwal and Kumaon Himalayas, including legendary peaks such as Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, and Nanda Kot. Watching pheasants feeding in the early morning light with snowy Himalayan giants in the background is a dream moment for any birder.
Another reason Pangot is loved by birdwatchers from both India and abroad is its peaceful atmosphere. Unlike some busier hill stations, Pangot is a quiet village where time slows down, allowing birders to enjoy uninterrupted mornings listening to bird calls echoing through the forest. The network of trails here is easy to walk and well known for producing incredible bird sightings season after season. National and international bird photographers often call it one of the best birdwatching hotspots in North India.
Whether you are a beginner taking your first birdwatching trip, or a seasoned birder chasing Himalayan specialties, Pangot never disappoints. Every visit brings something new – a rare species, a memorable photograph, or simply the joy of being surrounded by nature in its purest form.
This 2 Nights & 3 Days Pangot Birding Tour is designed to give you the essence of birdwatching in Uttarakhand, with focused time in the best birding trails and the expertise of experienced naturalists. Comfortable homestays and eco‑lodges in Pangot add to the overall charm, making the experience authentic, relaxed, and enriching.
