Overview

This Chopta Birding Tour is specially designed for birdwatchers and bird photographers who want to explore the breathtaking birdlife of the Indian Himalayas along with a friendly and cooperative expert bird guide. Situated within the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttarakhand. It is the largest protected area in the Western Himalayas, covering around 975 square kilometers in Uttarakhand. Established in 1972 primarily to protect the endangered Himalayan musk deer —this sanctuary is also home to Himalayan black bear, Himalayan Tahr, Leopard Cat, Yellow-throated Marten, Poircupines, and an incredible diversity of birdlife including the Himalayan monal, koklass pheasant, and Himalayan griffon.

Chopta Valley is a birdwatcher’s paradise filled with diverse landscapes—from dense oak and rhododendron forests to alpine meadows and crystal-clear mountain streams. This variety of habitats supports a wide range of stunning Himalayan birds, making the region a must-visit destination for bird enthusiasts. It is also widely known as the best place to spot the Himalayan Monal, a large and brilliantly colored pheasant that is the state bird of Uttarakhand. Its shimmering plumage of blues, greens, and reds stands out beautifully against the forest and snow. and the Snow Partridge, a rare high-altitude bird that prefers rocky alpine slopes is a prized sighting for anyone who loves himalaya birding.

Among the tour’s highlights is the thrilling opportunity to spot the Scarlet Finch, an exotic and brilliantly red bird that adds a vibrant splash of color during the winter months. Between November and March, many birds move down from higher altitudes to warmer forests and meadows in Chopta, creating fantastic birding opportunities. Along with scarlet finches, groups of bullfinches, rosefinches, grosbeaks, and accentors brighten the hillsides, making birdwatching a magical experience amid snow-dusted landscapes.

Our journey also includes time in the charming Mandal village, known for its peaceful atmosphere and wonderful birding trails. The village’s nearby forests are home to special species such as the Speckled Wood Pigeon, Golden Bush Robin, Chestnut-headed Tesia, and the Little Forktail, all of which we observe while enjoying the serene mountain environment.

One of the most beautiful parts of the tour is the Tungnath trek. This is Optional, a gentle 3-kilometer walk that we take slowly while birdwatching. This trail is not only filled with bird species such as the Brown Bullfinch, Collared Grosbeak, Alpine Accentor, and the Rufous-gorgeted Flycatcher, but it also offers some of the most breathtaking views of the Chaukhamba peak and the surrounding snow-capped Himalayan mountains. For those who want a bit more adventure, there is an optional extension to Chandrashila peak, where the mountain views become even more spectacular.

This tour gives you the chance to enjoy the best of Himalayan birdwatching while walking through some of India’s most stunning mountain landscapes. Sharing this journey with others adds to the fun and helps make every sighting and new bird discovery more special.
