Thano and Maldevta Bird Watching

Thano lies in the eastern part of the doon valley is thickly forested with Sal-mixed forests of the Shivalik hills Himalaya It is combination of riverine forest, agricultural fields, scrub jungle, and orchards which increase the diversity of birds. It is near to Rishikesh(20 km) and easily accessible.

Birds Found:

Common tailor bird, plum headed parakeet, white capped bunting, long tailed minivet, black lored tit, fire brested flowerpecker, greater flame back Wedge tailed Green Pigeon, Greater Yellownape, Great Slaty Woodpecker, Crested Kingfisher, Indian Pitta, Sirkeer Malkoha, Maroon Oriole, Orange-bellied Leafbird, Wallcreeper, rock Bunting, Green-Tailed Sunbird, Lesser golden back, velvet fronted nutatch etc 100s of birds found in Thano

 

Birding Trails:

Around Forest Rest House, Sal forest covering village area. Kalu sidh temple, upper ranikhet village, near by Maldevta and Lachhiwala jungle is the prominent birding area. One can enjoy single day or multiday (2-3 days) birding here as it is near to Rishikesh and Dehradun.

How to reach here:

Thano is mid of Dehradun and Rishikesh highway but does not fall to highway. A road near Himalayan Hospital , Jolly Grant goest to Thano which is about 9 km. If you are coming from Dehradun, you can by following Raipur road.
