About Asan

The Asan Conservation Reserve (400 m) in Dehradun district at the bank of river Yamuna is India's first conservation reserve, established in 2005. It covers 4.5 sq.km. area, this is situated at the junction of the Yamuna and Asan rivers. Asan is listed as an Important Bird Area (BNHS and BirdLife International). Its is popular for winter migrated birds.
Asan provides an ideal habitat to a large number of migratory and resident waterfowl. During winters, it not unusual to count as many as 8000 waterfowl with high species diversity as the Asan has both shallow and deep water areas. More than 251 birds species have been recorded in this area including 80 water-birds. This area is one of the best sites for congregations of Brahminy Ducks.
Considering the importantce of this waterland, the International Body for Conservation of Nature (IBNC) & Bird International have declared it is an Important Bird Area of India (IBA).

Itinerary:

Day 1:

Pickup by Cab from Jolly Grant Airport (11 am/12:10 )/Railway Station (12:40), Lunch break in route (Dehradun) on Restaurant/Hotel. Drive about 43 km (1 hour approx), reach at Asan by 2:30 pm.
Check-in, Eco-Lodge Room/Tent allocation with Welcome drink (non-alcoholic)
5:00pm-6:00pm : Introduction, Welcome at Asan Conservation Reserve, Setting up Groups, Introduction of Group Leader, Instructions about procedures, Safety, What to do, not to do.
6:00pm-6:15pm : Tea / Coffee with Snacks
6:15pm-7:00pm : About the Asan Conservation Reserve Region, importance of Birding in this area.
7:30pm-8:30pm : Dinner
8:30pm Onward : Overnight stay in Eco-lodge/Tents in twin, triple sharing

Day 2:

Wakeup early Morning by 6 am:

7:00am-11:00am : Birding Field trip 1, 2-3 km trail
11:00am-12:00pm : Break
12:00pm-1:30pm : Discussion about Field Trip, creating Firs Bird Check List
1:30pm-2:30pm : Lunch

3:00pm-5:30pm : Birding Field trip 2, 3-4 km trail
6:00pm-6:15pm : Tea / Coffee with Snacks
7:00pm-8:00pm : Discuss about habitat of Bird and Interactive Q & A session. Games/Performance by Individual Participants, Prices for Winners.
8:00pm-9:00pm : Dinner with Bonfire
9:00pm Onward : Overnight stay in Eco-Lodge/Tents in twin, triple sharing

Day 3:

Wakeup early Morning by 6 am:
6:30am-07:00am : Breakfast
7:00am-11:00am : Birding Field trip 3, 3-4 km trail.
11:00am-12:00pm : Break
12:00pm-1:30pm : Discussion about Field Trip, creating, Guest Speaker (Forest Officer from Asan, who well versed about local area, importance, why visit again, unexplored area of nearby)
1:30pm-2:30pm : Lunch
2:30pm-3:00pm : Rest
3:00pm-5:30pm : Birding Field trip 4, 3-4 km trail
6:00pm-6:15pm : Tea / Coffee with Snacks
7:00pm-8:00pm : Creating Second Bird List /Adding new birds in list, Discuss about habitat of Bird and Interactive Q & A session. Games/Performance by Individual Participants, Prices for Winners, Feedback.
8:00pm-9:00pm : Special Dinner with Bonfire
9:00pm Onward : Overnight stay in Eco-Lodge/Tents in twin, triple sharing

Day 4:

8:30am-09:00am : Breakfast
9:00am-11:00am : Visit of World famous Ponta Sahib Gurudwara, by Cab
11:00am-11:15am : Tea with Snacks
11:30am : Checkout, Board into Cab, Reach Dehradun Railway station/Airport by 12:30pm.

Bird Specialities:

As per the records, more than 250 bird species including 80 water birds were recorded. It is marked by presence of Brahminy ducks, Rudely Shel duck, Dabbling Duck, Diving Duck. Birds; Herons, Egrets, storks, Ibises are Geese, which are seen during winter season (Nov to Feb)

How to Reach

Firstly you have to Reach Dehradun city. Dehradun is the state capital of Uttarakhand and well connected through Bus, Train and Airport. Jolly Grant Airport is just 20 Km from City. From Delhi there are regular direct Trains (including 2 Shatabdi Express), Busess and Flights available. Distance from Delhi: 259 Km. Asan CR is 43 Km from Dehradun. We will do pickup from Dehradun as communicated after booking.
